Weekend Manager

Rate $18-$20 per hour, DOE
Hours 12-16 hours per week
Saturday and Sunday
11:30am to 5:30pm
Occasional flex morning (9:30am start) and evening hours by pre-arrangement

Overall Job Description The Museum of Children’s Art operates a children’s art gallery and studios, as well as a number of outreach programs in the schools and community.  These programs serve approximately 25,000 children annually. MOCHA’s museum programs take place in the gallery/studio six days per week. These include exhibits, classes, camps, workshops, field-trips, drop-in art programming, and art parties.
This Position Reports To Director, Museum Programs
Position Responsibilities Museum Management. Oversees the operation of all weekend programming, fee collection and maintenance of MOCHA facilities. Is the primary contact for staff, teaching artists, volunteers and visitors.
  • supervises paid and non-paid staff.
  • oversees preparation, coordination and management of program supplies, studios, galleries, courtyard and general museum facilities.
  • manages front desk staff and fosters a welcoming reception for all visitors.
  • oversees appearance and maintenance of all museum areas.
  • oversees storage and preparation and processing of art supply materials.
  • reports weekend activities to the Director of Museum Programs.
  • provides customer service for all visitors and members.
Cash Management. Collects program fees and completes retail transactions, including:
  • Entering all sales and fees into the cash register.
  • Completing credit card transactions.
  • Performing twice-daily audit of cash balances.
  • Preparing end of day financial reports.
Art Facilitation. Oversees the design and implementation of age appropriate, interactive art stations designed to encourage creativity and exploration of materials in a variety of settings, including: drop-in art programs, workshops and classes, and art parties and events. Includes curriculum development.
  • supervises paid staff to implement art curriculum for children and families in MOCHA studio spaces.
  • monitors studio cleanliness and safety. 
  • supervises week-end volunteers and assigns tasks preparing materials, working with children in art activities, and clean up.
Position Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree or equivalent with emphasis on visual arts education
  • Able to demonstrate an ability to engage, challenge and interest children, youth and families through arts education and creative self-expression
  • Willing to learn and utilize the State of California's Visual Arts Framework
  • Experience working in public creative spaces, facility management, retail and arts administration, leading and supervising groups and teams.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to interact in a positive and courteous manner with a diverse community of neighbors, donors, teaching artists, arts administrators, children and families.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with a proven ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities, plan ahead, anticipate and articulate program needs, and work independently.
  • Ability to speak more than one language highly desirable, but not required.
  • Computer literate with experience using Internet, word processing, spreadsheet and database software. This position includes training to order and manage cash using computers and point of sale systems.
  • Ability to safely lift 50 pounds.
  • A powerful neat streak.
  • Ability to work with a diverse team of paid and non-paid staff.
  • Flexible, imaginative and gifted with a sense of humor.
