These studio camps are geared towards serious young artists, with a focus on learning techniques and honing skills in each week's subject. No previous art training is required, but a strong commitment to the arts is expected.

MOCHA Advanced Studio Camp costs
$265 per week if registered by June 1/$275 per week if registered after June 1st
for art instruction, weekly field trips, 2 daily snacks and all materials. $238 for the week of june 30.
Students bring their own lunches.

  • Precare costs $15 per week.
  • Aftercare costs $50 per week.

Cartooning 101

From the black and white single panel strip to full comic magazines, we'll reveal the tricks of the trade, including inking, panel layout, facial expressions, character design and storytelling.

Continued Cartooning/ Manga and More

We will be focusing on specific comic styles, including Manga, graphic novels and caricature, and experimenting with beginning animation techniques. This class may be taken as a companion to Cartooning 101 or taken on its own.

Wearable Art

Design your own wearable art pieces, while learning hand and machine sewing, dyeing and beadwork techniques. Learn about clothing, costumes and jewelry from around the world.

july 7-11

Sculpture

Explore different techniques for creating three-dimensional works of art, including modeling, casting, carving and assemblage. We’ll experiment with a variety of media, including clay, wood, wire and plaster.

july 14-18

Drawing

This class is a good introduction or review for any young artist working toward a new level of expertise in representational drawing. Learn and practice all the guidelines and techniques for portrait, life drawing and landscape using charcoal, ink and pencil.

july 21-25

Painting

Focusing on color theory and acrylic painting techniques, this studio is for youth artists working to refine color mixing and control paint to create realistic highlights, shadows and form. Study the use of color by famous artists and learn to choose colors to make specific effects.

Printmaking I

Survey simple printmaking techniques with relief prints, rubbings, collographs and monoprinting. Investigate basic bookmaking skills and create graphic art journals using multiple binding techniques.

Architecture

Study the art of building design and urban planning. Create mock-ups, plans and scale models. Learn the basic elements of construction and engineering.
Field trip: Architectural Walking Tour of Oakland
aug 11-15

Low-Tech Animation

Take a basic approach to animation using a variety of techniques, including flipbooks, paper cutout (South Park-style), zoetropes, clay animation and stop-motion. We’ll write, storyboard, and complete a group project, then make DVDs of our final project.

aug 18-22

Printmaking II

Learn advanced techniques of intaglio, stenciling, screen-printing and marbling. Create your own artist series of images. Study alternative bookmaking techniques including beginning pop-up engineering.
