all about the museum of children's art

philosophy
Since 1988, MOCHA has encouraged hands-on learning in the arts and has promoted the arts as a way to help children of all backgrounds develop as healthy, resourceful and involved citizens. MOCHA promotes the arts as an integral part of strong, vibrant communities. We provide opportunities for children to explore their creativity; design, implement and advocate for hands-on arts education programs; and emphasize outreach to children and families from low-income communities.

mission
To ensure that the arts are a fundamental part of the lives of all children.

children
The 32,000 children who participate in MOCHA's programs annually range in age from 18 months to 18 years old and come from ethnically and economically diverse backgrounds. Seventy percent come from low-income families.

staff
MOCHA's exceptional staff is comprised of 15 full-time and 25 part-time people. All of our instructors and many members of our administrative staff are practicing artists.

programs
MOCHA has three program focus areas:

  • School Programs, which served more than 4,000 students in grades K-12 at 47 East Bay schools in 2005-06 through classroom artist residencies and afterschool programs, and provided professional development to more than 320 teachers and administrators.

  • Museum Programs, at MOCHA's downtown Oakland gallery and studios, which reached nearly 12,000 students through daily dro-in art programs and monthly Family Extravaganzas, school field trips, holiday and summer art camps, and the Little Studio, a specially designed space for children ages 18 months to 5 years. MOCHA is also the only Bay Area museum exclusively exhibiting artwork by and for children.

  • Community Partner Programs, which engaged more than 16,000 youth in hands-on art activities at public libraries, in public housing, and at Dia delos Muertos, Art & Soul, International Children and Youth Day, and other community festivals and events throughout Oakland and the East Bay.

    funding
MOCHA's work is sustained through the generous support of numerous individuals, foundations, corporations and government agencies, including Anonymous, the City of Oakland Cultural Funding Program, The Clorox Company Foundation, the David B. Gold Foundation, the East Bay Community Foundation, First Five Alameda County: Every Child Counts, the Evelyn and Walter Haas Jr. Fund, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Oakland Fund for Children and Youth, the San Francisco Foundation, the Tides Foundation and the Westly Foundation.
